Class Reflection (1/26/12)

May 3, 2012

Today, our news releases were due.  News releases are important because it allows an organization to get information out to a large number of people, rather quickly.  We learned about the proper outline/design for a news release, including the heading, logos, title, date, etc.  Also, we learned about the inverted triangle, which is a way to right a news release.  The inverted triangle is when you write the most important information first, and gradually work your way down to the least important information.

We also talked about news conferences, and the best techniques to have an effective one.  Some advice on having an effective news conference would be to make sure you look the part.  Be positive, it is an opportunity to shed a positive light on your organization.  Never say “no comment.”  If there is something you can’t answer, don’t be afraid to say “I don’t know,” and give an explanation as to why you can’t get into something.  Be prepared for potential questions that may be asked, and have some talking points ready that you want to hit.  Remember that you don’t need to answer questions that are potentially embarrassing, or that are irrelevant.  Lastly, be respectful to the reporter and they will be respectful to you in return.
